History

The Hiroshima Museum of Art was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the local Hiroshima Bank and opened on November 3, 1978. It was designed by Nikken Sekkei, and its architecture was honored with the BCS Prize. Built around a collection of modern Western art with the French Impressionists at its core, the museum has been cherished by the people of Hiroshima since it opened, bringing culture and a place of respite to a city that walked the path of recovery after the atomic bombing. Registered as a museum of Hiroshima Prefecture, it continues to be run by the Hiroshima Museum of Art public-interest foundation.
