Overview

The Port of Tadanoumi is a regional harbour in the Tadanoumi district of Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is managed by Hiroshima Prefecture and is designated as a port under the Port Regulations Act. Best known as the gateway to Okunoshima, the beloved rabbit island, it is often called the doorway to Rabbit Island and makes a natural starting point for a Seto Inland Sea journey.

Highlights

  • The departure port for Okunoshima, cherished as the gateway to Rabbit Island
  • A rabbit-themed souvenir shop right by the harbour
  • Easy access on foot, about seven minutes from Tadanoumi Station
  • A Seto Inland Sea route continuing past Okunoshima to Ōmishima's Sakari Port

History

Administered by Hiroshima Prefecture as a regional harbour, the Port of Tadanoumi is classed as a Class B port under the port survey regulations based on the Statistics Act. In recent years it has drawn attention as the base for visiting Okunoshima, and it has been fitted out to welcome travellers, including a rabbit-themed souvenir shop by the ferry terminal.

Access

The port lies near latitude 34.34 north and longitude 132.99 east, in Tadanoumi, Takehara. Most travellers alight at JR Tadanoumi Station and reach the harbour on foot in about seven minutes. From here, scheduled ferries run by Ōmishima Ferry and Kyukamura Okunoshima cross to Okunoshima, and some services continue on to Sakari Port on Ōmishima in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. Since times and routes can change, please confirm with official sources.

Best season

Facing the mild Seto Inland Sea, the port is most pleasant from spring through autumn, when a short crossing feels its best. If you plan to linger on Okunoshima, choose a day of settled weather. Because sailings depend on sea conditions, it is reassuring to check the day's operating status before you set out.
