History
Ryuzu-kyo was shaped over long ages by the erosion of the upper Mitani River, and its outstanding natural setting earned it designation as a Natural Environment Conservation Area of Hiroshima Prefecture. It is also counted among Japan's «Hundred Hidden Retreats», a selection of the nation's lesser-known wild places, and its primeval gorge scenery has been preserved to this day. Tsutsuga, its place name, is one of the districts that make up Akiota Town.
Access
The gorge lies in Tsutsuga, Akiota Town, Yamagata District, Hiroshima Prefecture (around 34.55°N, 132.26°E), tucked among the Chugoku Mountains. Akiota Town is a mountainous area inland from central Hiroshima, and reaching the gorge is generally done by car.
