Overview

Mount Hinokigura rises to 1,744.2 meters on the border between Minamiuonuma in Niigata Prefecture and Minakami in Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. It sits directly on the Central Divide separating waters that flow to the Sea of Japan from those bound for the Pacific, and it is known as one of the peaks encircling the headwaters of the Tone River. Also called Higurayama, it lies deep in the Jōshin'etsu highlands, a quiet and demanding summit favored by seasoned climbers.

Highlights

  • A 1,744.2-meter peak on the Niigata–Gunma prefectural border
  • A position on the Central Divide between Sea-of-Japan and Pacific waters
  • Presence as a watershed peak encircling the Tone River headwaters
  • A quiet summit for seasoned climbers, also known as Higurayama

History

Mount Hinokigura has long been recognized as a border peak dividing Echigo (Niigata) from Jōshū (Gunma). Standing on the geographic pivot of the Central Divide, it marks the point where falling rain parts toward the Sea of Japan and the Pacific. This area, cradling the headwaters of the Tone River, has been valued as a watershed that guards the source of the river. For details on the history of climbing here or the origin of the mountain's name, it is best to check official information and local materials before setting out.

Access

The mountain lies on the Niigata–Gunma prefectural border at roughly 36.91°N, 138.97°E. Because this is deep terrain with limited trail development, be sure to verify trailheads and approaches from the Minakami or Minamiuonuma side against the latest official and mountaineering information. Entering the range, especially in the snow season, demands thorough planning and equipment.

Best season

From early summer, when the lingering snow melts and the ridgeline greenery is fresh, through the autumn foliage is regarded as the climbing season. At around 1,700 meters the air stays cool even in summer, and sudden weather changes call for caution. In winter the mountain becomes a serious snow peak buried in deep snow, so avoid entering without experience and preparation.
