Overview

The Karasu River is a Class 1 river in Gunma Prefecture, flowing mainly through the city of Takasaki. As a left-bank tributary of the Tone River, it drains almost the entire western part of Gunma, known as the Seimo region. Running roughly 61.8 kilometers, it changes character along the way, sliding from mountain valleys through the streets of Takasaki and out toward the Kanto Plain. Its banks are lined with walking paths and open riverside flats that make it a familiar, everyday waterside for local residents.

Highlights

  • A Class 1 river draining almost the entire western Seimo region of Gunma
  • Flows right beside central Takasaki, where city and nature meet
  • About 61.8 kilometers long, shifting in character from source to mouth
  • Open walking paths and riverbeds that invite you to the water's edge

History

The Karasu River has long supported life and industry in the Seimo region, linking villages through irrigation and, in earlier times, river transport. As the town of Takasaki grew, the river watered its fields and eased the movement of people and goods. Today it is managed as a Class 1 river for both flood control and water use, with embankments and riverbeds maintained to protect the city while offering residents a place to relax. For detailed historical records, please refer to official sources.

Access

The river runs near latitude 36.27, longitude 139.17, close to central Takasaki. Starting from Takasaki Station, you can reach the water from several bridges and riverside areas as you move around the city. Because the course is long, the atmosphere varies greatly depending on which stretch you visit. Check official information for specific walking routes and parking before setting out.

Best season

Spring brings soft cherry blossoms and fresh greenery along the embankments, ideal for a riverside stroll. Summer draws people seeking coolness as the water rises, while autumn colors the surrounding hills and reflects them on the surface. In winter the air turns clear, and on some days you can see the distant mountains of Joshu. Each season has its charm, but spring and autumn are especially pleasant for a gentle walk.

Did you know?

💡 The name Karasu appears for several rivers across the Kanto region, but this one stands out for draining nearly all of the Seimo area. Because it skirts central Takasaki, urban life and a natural waterside sit right beside each other. Looking down from a bridge, you can watch the town and the river blend into a single scene.
