History

Ryuunzan Fumon-ji belongs to the Soto school of Zen Buddhism and has long supported local Kannon devotion as the 20th temple of the Ena Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. The Soto school places seated meditation, zazen, at the heart of its practice, and Fumon-ji carries on that tradition as a rural temple. For details of its founding and history, it is best to check the notices on the grounds or official information when you visit.

Access

The temple lies in Shimotamuke, Yamaoka-cho, Ena City, near 35.35 N and 137.37 E. Tucked into the hills on the way from central Ena toward the Yamaoka area, it is most easily reached by car. By public transport, take the Akechi Railway from Ena Station toward Yamaoka, then continue by local bus or on foot. Please confirm current timetables and parking through official sources.

Best season

The fresh green of early summer and the tinted foliage of autumn bring out the quiet charm of this Zen temple. If you are also walking the Kannon pilgrimage, the long, walkable days from spring through autumn are ideal. Dress for cold and possible snow in winter.
