
Overview
Shiroyama Park is a public park in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. Spreading across Gagyuzan (also called Tomoeyama), the hill overlooking the old castle town of Hida-Takayama, it was created by landscaping the ruins of Takayama Castle. Chosen among Japan's 100 Best Historical Parks and 100 Best Urban Parks, it lets you enjoy the atmosphere of a castle site and rich greenery all at once.

History
Shiroyama Park was opened in 1873 (Meiji 6) by landscaping Shiroyama (Gagyuzan, also called Tomoeyama), the site of the former Takayama Castle. It preserves the memory of the castle that once governed Hida in the Edo period, and its grounds include not only the ruins of Takayama Castle but also Shoren-ji Temple and Hida Gokoku Shrine. Highly regarded as a historical park, it is loved as a walking course tracing the history of Hida.
Access
The park lies in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture (around 36.14°N, 137.26°E). It is within walking distance of JR Takayama Station through Takayama's old townscape, on high ground easily reached from the heart of Hida-Takayama sightseeing. As the grounds are hilly, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please confirm the exact route through official information.
Best season
As one of the 33 Selected Cherry Blossom Spots of Hida and Mino, the park is especially resplendent in spring. The fresh green of early summer, the crimson foliage of autumn, and the snow-covered scenes of winter are all beautiful, and its deep greenery invites forest bathing. Combined with a walk through the castle town, it is a park you will want to revisit in every season.
