Overview

Mount Ibuki is the main and highest peak of the Ibuki Mountains, which run north–south along the border of Shiga and Gifu Prefectures, rising to 1,377 metres. On the Shiga side it lies in Maibara, and on the Gifu side in Ibigawa and Sekigahara; its summit, where a first-order triangulation point is set, falls within Maibara. It is the highest mountain in Shiga Prefecture and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.

Highlights

  • A summit of 1,377 metres, the highest point of the Ibuki range and of Shiga Prefecture
  • A first-order triangulation point set at the summit
  • Listed among the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains and other mountain selections
  • An ancient sacred peak recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki

History

Long regarded as a sacred peak, Mount Ibuki appears in the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, which preserve a legend in which Yamato Takeru, returning from an eastern campaign, tried to defeat the deity of Mount Ibuki and was struck down in turn. It has been selected as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, as well as being counted among several other lists of noted mountains. Its name is sung in the school songs of many schools across Shiga, Gifu, Aichi, and Mie Prefectures.

Access

The mountain straddles Maibara in Shiga Prefecture and Ibigawa and Sekigahara in Gifu Prefecture, so its slopes can be reached from either side of the prefectural border.

Best season

As a mountain it offers a distinct character in each season, and its inclusion among noted flower mountains points to its plant life as a feature of the landscape.
