History

Belonging to the Rinzai Myoshin-ji school of Zen Buddhism, the temple is said to have grown alongside the hot springs of Gero. As one of the sacred sites of the Chubu 49 Yakushi Pilgrimage, devoted to the healing Buddha Yakushi Nyorai, it has long been a fitting place of prayer in a town famed for its curative waters. Access

The temple sits on a hill near the center of Gero Onsen in Gero, Gifu Prefecture (around 35.81N, 137.24E). It is within walking distance of Gero Station on the JR Takayama Main Line; walk through the spa town and climb the stone steps to reach it. From Nagoya or Takayama, limited express trains or car access are convenient. As the approach follows stone steps, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Autumn is especially rewarding, when the colored foliage frames a beautiful view of the spa town below. Spring cherry blossoms and the fresh greenery of early summer are refreshing, while a dusting of winter snow deepens the mood alongside a round of hot-spring bathing.
