Highlights

  • A museum displaying materials of the Nakasendo post town of Unuma-juku
  • A town-rooted hub combining tourist guidance and community exchange
  • A building using a townhouse that conveys the post town's character
  • A location that serves as a starting point for the Unuma-juku townscape walk

History

Unuma-juku flourished as one of the post stations on the Nakasendo, the highway linking Edo and Kyoto. The Machiya-kan makes use of a traditional townhouse that still conveys the flavor of the old post town, introducing the highway culture of former times through displays of materials connected with Unuma-juku. Since opening in 2008, it has been cherished as a hub combining tourist guidance with community exchange.

Access

The facility stands in 1-chome, Unuma-nishimachi, Kakamigahara, at roughly 35.40 degrees north and 136.94 degrees east. Walking from a station on the Meitetsu Kakamigahara Line or from Unuma Station on the JR Takayama Main Line toward the townscape of Nakasendo's Unuma-juku, you will find the Machiya-kan in one corner of it. Check official information for opening hours and closed days.

Best season

As an indoor exhibition facility it can be enjoyed year-round, but if you combine it with a walk through the Unuma-juku townscape, the mild weather of spring or autumn is most comfortable. Did you know?

💡 A distinctive feature is that the ordinance defines it with two roles, sharing tourist information and serving as a place of community exchange, so it is more than a mere exhibition hall. For travelers it acts as a gateway to exploring Unuma-juku, and for locals as a gathering place, making it a facility firmly rooted in the town.
