Gero Onsen is a hot spring in Gero, Gifu Prefecture. Together with Arima Onsen and Kusatsu Onsen, it has long been counted among Japan's three great hot springs. It has been known as a noted spring since ancient times.

History

In the Muromachi period, the scholar Banri Shūku listed this spring, together with Arima Onsen and Kusatsu Onsen, among the three great hot springs. In the Edo period, Hayashi Razan likewise recorded these three as the finest hot springs in the land. At that time, however, the place was written as Yushima rather than Gero. The site corresponds to the former Hida Province, in what was Gero-cho, Mashita district, Gifu Prefecture.
