According to tradition, Kaminoshima-Shinmei Shrine is one of the candidate shrines identified with Kawashima Shrine, a Shikinaisha of Hakuri District in Owari Province. However, works such as the Kawashima Town history identify the candidate shrines for Kawashima Shrine as Shirahige Shrine in Kawashima-Kasada-cho, Kakamigahara, and Enoki Shrine in Kawashima-Matsukura-cho, Kakamigahara. The name Kaminoshima recalls a former minor place name.
