History
The Munakata-Okinoshima area is known as a place where state rituals praying for safe sea voyages were held from the 4th to the 9th century, and it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2017. Koyajima is included among its component parts, positioned as a reef that, together with Okinoshima, composes a sacred seascape. Preserved in its natural state without human alteration, it conveys that value to the present day.
Access
The islet lies near 34.23°N, 130.11°E, offshore from Munakata City. As part of a sacred World Heritage domain, public landing is not permitted, and the island itself cannot be approached closely. The customary way is to venerate it from afar from the Munakata coast or from a boat on routes overlooking Okinoshima. Please confirm whether viewing is possible and check boat-service details through official information.
Best season
Spring through autumn, when the sea is calm and visibility good, suits distant viewing of the island from a boat or the shore. Because weather over the Genkai Sea changes quickly, plan any distant worship or nearby sightseeing around the day's sea conditions and enjoy it within safe limits.
