It is famous nationwide for the Path of Light, when twice a year the setting sun aligns perfectly down the shrine's stone steps and the approach that runs straight toward Ainoshima Island in the Genkai Sea, drawing crowds of worshippers and photographers. History

Miyajidake Shrine has long drawn devotion as a shrine enshrining Empress Jingū. Behind its grounds lies the Miyajidake Kofun, a National Historic Site, a sign that this land held special meaning since ancient times. Over its long history the shrine has been widely revered as a deity of prosperous business and good fortune, and it bustles with worshippers year-round, above all at New Year. For details of its origins and the evolution of its rites, consult the shrine's official information.

Access

The shrine stands in Fukutsu, Fukuoka (around 33.78°N, 130.49°E). Most visitors come by bus or taxi from Fukuma Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line; by car, head toward the coast from Koga IC on the Kyushu Expressway. During the Path of Light season it grows extremely crowded, so public transport and early arrival are advised. The long flight of stone steps calls for comfortable walking shoes.

Best season

The famed Path of Light appears twice a year, typically in late February and late October, when the sunset aligns straight down the approach. Exact dates and viewing arrangements vary each year, so check official information. The grounds are also lovely with cherry blossoms and autumn colors, and the New Year draws a special crowd. If chasing the sunset view, plan your visit around the time of dusk.
