Overview

Tetsudo Shrine, whose name means Railway Shrine, stands in Hakata-eki-chuogai, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies a rare position for a Shinto shrine, set within the Tsubame no Mori Hiroba rooftop garden atop JR Hakata City, the station building of JR Hakata Station. Its enshrined deity was divided from Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata Ward, and it is cherished as a place to pray for railway safety and safe travels. Its appeal lies in how easily it can be visited between shopping and dining, and in its unique setting at Hakata Station, the gateway to Kyushu.

Highlights

  • A rare setting for a shrine, enshrined on the rooftop of a station building
  • A deity divided from Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata Ward
  • The relief of railway engineer Hermann Rumschottel
  • Views of the Hakata townscape from the Tsubame no Mori Hiroba rooftop garden

History

Tetsudo Shrine is a modern shrine established together with the station building of JR Hakata Station, the land gateway to Kyushu, and its deity was received by division from Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata Ward. Within its precincts stands a relief of Hermann Rumschottel, a German railway engineer who guided Japan's railway technology during the Meiji era, linking the history of Japan's railways to the ground of Hakata. Please check official sources for details of its founding.

Access

The shrine is on the rooftop of JR Hakata City, the station building directly connected to JR Hakata Station, within the Tsubame no Mori Hiroba garden. Hakata Station is one of Kyushu's largest terminals, gathering Shinkansen, conventional lines and subway, and an elevator carries visitors from the concourse to the rooftop, making access easy in any weather. It lies near latitude 33.59 north and longitude 130.42 east. Opening hours follow those of the facility, so please confirm with official information.

Best season

Being a rooftop garden shrine, it is especially recommended on clear days in spring, when the greenery is pleasant, and in autumn, when the air is crisp. As you can look out over the townscape of Fukuoka from this high place, dusk and evening hours have a fine atmosphere too. Because you reach it entirely indoors, it is little affected by the weather throughout the year.

Did you know?

💡 Hermann Rumschottel, whose relief stands in the precincts, was a German engineer invited to Meiji-era Japan who was involved in laying railways in Kyushu. Fitting for Hakata as a railway city, the shrine serves as a place to honor a benefactor of the railways alongside the guardian deity of the station, which is one of its distinctive points of interest.
