Overview

The Fukuoka Art Museum stands within the greenery of Ohori Park in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City. Opened on 3 November 1979, this municipal museum holds a wide-ranging collection that spans modern Western art, classical Asian art, and works connected to the region. It is well known for housing Salvador Dali's The Madonna of Port Lligat, and its lakeside, tree-lined setting makes it a perfect stop during a leisurely walk.

Highlights

  • Kunio Maekawa's brick-tiled architecture, honored with the BCS Prize
  • Modern Western masterpieces including Dali's The Madonna of Port Lligat
  • A broad collection bridging Western, Japanese, and Asian art
  • An open setting surrounded by the water and greenery of Ohori Park

History

The building was designed by Kunio Maekawa, a leading figure in modern Japanese architecture, and it opened on 3 November 1979. Its solid brick-tiled exterior and horizontal composition blend into the park landscape, and the design earned the BCS Prize for architectural excellence. After a major renovation lasting about two and a half years from 2016, the museum reopened in March 2019 with upgraded galleries and improved accessibility.

Access

The museum sits on the southern side of Ohori Park in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka (roughly 33.58N, 130.38E). It is within walking distance of Ohorikoen Station or Ropponmatsu Station on the Fukuoka City Subway, and strolling to it through the park is a pleasant approach. Opening hours, closed days, and special-exhibition dates change over time, so please confirm the latest details through official sources before visiting.

Best season

As an indoor facility it is comfortable to enjoy all year round, but spring, when cherry blossoms and fresh greenery brighten Ohori Park, and autumn, with its colored leaves, are especially rewarding when combined with a walk in the park. During summer and the rainy season, the cool galleries offer a relaxed way to spend time with the artworks.
