It makes an easy stop while strolling along Fukuoka's waterfront.

Highlights

  • 360-degree panorama of Hakata Bay from the 73.5-metre observation deck
  • The 103-metre red steel tower designed by Tachu Naito
  • A lattice-frame silhouette in the “Six Tower Brothers” lineage
  • Waterfront strolling around Bayside Place Hakata Wharf

History

Hakata Port Tower opened on 17 October 1964. It was designed by Tachu Naito, the structural engineer known as the “doctor of towers” who also created Tokyo Tower and Tsutenkaku. Its red steel lattice frame belongs to the family of Naito-designed structures nicknamed the “Six Tower Brothers,” and it has served as a landmark of the wharf ever since.

Access

The tower stands within Bayside Place Hakata Wharf, facing Hakata Bay in Hakata-ku. It can be reached by city bus from around Hakata Station or the Tenjin district, and municipal ferry terminals lie nearby. As opening hours and observation-deck conditions may change, please confirm the latest details through official sources before visiting.

Best season

Spring to early summer, when the sea breeze is pleasant, and clear autumn days are ideal for the view. Arriving around sunset lets you watch Hakata Bay shift from evening glow into night, with the harbour lights reflecting on the water.
