Dazaifu was a regional government office established in Chikuzen Province in Kyushu in the late 7th century. Its principal duties were military affairs and diplomacy, and it also oversaw the internal administration of the Kyushu region. The center of its government seat corresponds to present-day Dazaifu and Chikushino in Fukuoka Prefecture and is designated a Special Historic Site.
