History

The Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art opened on 3 November 1985. Its precursor was the Fukuoka Prefectural Cultural Hall, which combined an art museum and a library and opened on 3 November 1964, from which the museum later became independent. The building was designed by architect Takeo Sato and received the BCS Prize, awarded for outstanding architecture.

Access

The museum is in the Tenjin district of Chuo-ku, facing Suzaki Park. Tenjin is Fukuoka's foremost commercial quarter, well served by subway and bus, and the museum can also be reached on foot while walking through the area. As opening hours, closing days and exhibitions change, please confirm details through official sources before visiting.

Best season

As an indoor facility it can be enjoyed year-round regardless of the weather, offering a calm retreat from summer heat or winter cold. Paired with the greenery of adjacent Suzaki Park, it fits naturally into a downtown walk during the cherry-blossom or fresh-green seasons.
