Overview
Mount Sarakura (Sarakura-yama) is a 622-meter mountain rising in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. Together with Gongenyama, Hobashirayama, Hanaoyama and others it forms the Hobashira range and is part of Kitakyushu Quasi-National Park. History
The Hobashira range that includes Mount Sarakura is said to have handed down many legends connected with Empress Jingu, suggesting that it has long been a stage for people's faith and stories. In modern times it has been cherished as a symbolic mountain of Yahata, the city of steel, and the lights of the town seen from the summit mirror the very path of Kitakyushu's growth as an industrial city. Detailed background on these legends and history is also introduced at the summit facilities and in official information.
Access
Mount Sarakura sits near latitude 33.84 and longitude 130.79 in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu. The foot of the mountain is reachable from the JR Yahata Station area, and from the base you can ride a cable car and then a slope car to near the summit. Since cable car operating hours, closed days, and especially evening hours for night-view visits vary by season, please confirm with official information before your visit.
Best season
Autumn to winter, when the clear air makes the night view especially vivid, is particularly recommended, though spring and summer with fresh greenery and sunset views are also appealing. The moment when lights flood the city from dusk into night is exceptional, so a classic plan is to go up in the late afternoon and watch the shift from sunset to night view. As the summit is colder than the city, bringing a jacket is wise.
