Overview
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park spreads across the “Uminonakamichi” sandbar between Hakata Bay and the Genkai Sea in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka. Opened in 1981 as Japan's fifth national government park, it covers a planned area of about 540 hectares and gathers seasonal flower fields, a Ferris wheel and the Marine World Uminonakamichi aquarium into one seaside resort where a full day passes easily.
Highlights
- ●Blue nemophila fields and Ferris-wheel views that colour the spring
- ●Marine World Uminonakamichi, an aquarium themed on Kyushu's seas
- ●Vast flower fields that bloom anew with each season
- ●A setting on the Uminonakamichi sandbar between two seas
History
The area was once used as an airfield and as a naval and later U.S. military base; after the land was returned it was developed into a park. It opened on 20 October 1981 and grew into one of Kyushu's leading national parks. Selected among Japan's 100 Best Urban Parks, it is loved as a vast green space making the most of its sea-surrounded setting.
Access
The park lies on the Uminonakamichi sandbar in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka. JR Uminonakamichi Station on the Kashii Line sits within the grounds for direct rail access, and boats also cross from points such as Hakata Wharf. As the grounds are large, in-park transport is convenient. Please check official sources for service and opening details.
Best season
The flower scenery changes with the seasons: blue fields of nemophila in spring, colourful blooms through early summer, and cosmos in autumn. Spring is especially popular, when the Ferris wheel offers views over both the flowers and the sea.
