Overview

Joun-ji is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha school, located in the Shimoshirouzu area of western Kasuga City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Set quietly in a residential district of Kasuga, adjacent to Fukuoka City, it is a local family temple rather than a grand sightseeing temple, with the feel of a place woven into the everyday life of the town. It is a spot where you can grow familiar with the teachings of Jodo Shinshu while savoring the quiet hours of the Kasuga countryside.

Highlights

  • A local temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha (Nishi Honganji lineage)
  • A quiet family temple in Shimoshirouzu, western Kasuga
  • A residential setting with easy access from metropolitan Fukuoka
  • A calm place of faith carrying on the nembutsu teaching

History

Joun-ji belongs to the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha, the Nishi Honganji lineage that reveres Shinran Shonin as its founder. Rooted in the land of Shimoshirouzu in western Kasuga, it has supported the religious life of the community together with its parishioners. Because detailed records such as the exact year of founding are limited, it is safest to confirm through on-site notices or official information when you visit. As its school indicates, it has kept its dharma lamp burning as a temple carrying on the teachings of nembutsu and reliance on Amida's vow.

Access

The temple is in the Shimoshirouzu district of western Kasuga City, Fukuoka Prefecture, at roughly 33.53 degrees north and 130.44 degrees east. Kasuga adjoins Fukuoka City to the south, so access from the Fukuoka metropolitan area is relatively good. As the surroundings are residential, please be mindful of the local living environment and confirm in advance through official information regarding worship and parking.

Best season

As a Jodo Shinshu temple, the seasons of the spring and autumn equinox services and the Hoonko memorial rite carry particular meaning. Spring, when cherry blossoms bloom, and the clear air of autumn and winter, when you can quietly join your hands in prayer, are also pleasant. Being a calm temple in a residential area, it offers a peaceful moment whenever you visit.

Did you know?

💡 The Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha to which Joun-ji belongs reveres Shinran as its founder and has Nishi Honganji in Kyoto as its head temple. The name Joun-ji is found in various places, but this temple is the one located in Shimoshirouzu, Kasuga City, Fukuoka, and should be understood as distinct from similarly named temples elsewhere.
