History
Nokonoshima Island Park opened on April 2, 1969, and has been loved by the people of Fukuoka for more than half a century. Making the most of the natural setting of Noko Island in Hakata Bay, it has been cultivated around flower fields that are replanted with each season. Over the decades the whole island came to be known as a flower destination, and it remains a classic choice for spring and autumn outings for the citizens of Fukuoka.
Access
The usual route is to take the city ferry to Noko Island from the Meinohama ferry terminal in Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City, then continue from the island's terminal to the park by bus. The park sits at the northern tip of the island, near latitude 33.63 north and longitude 130.30 east. As ferry timetables and island transport vary by season and day of the week, please confirm the latest service information from official sources.
Best season
The two great seasons are spring, when rape blossoms cover the slopes, and autumn, when cosmos sways in the sea breeze. The spring view of Shikanoshima and the Genkai Sea seen beyond the yellow blossoms is especially fine. Hydrangeas in early summer and narcissus in winter mean there is almost always some flower to enjoy, which is a major draw.
