Overview

Hakata No.1 Tomb was a keyhole-shaped burial mound from the early middle Kofun period that once stood in the Gokushomachi area of Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. It lay within the extensive Hakata ruins that spread through the city center, offering a glimpse into an even older chapter of Hakata, a port town that has flourished since antiquity. Though the mound itself no longer survives, the very fact that a tomb for a powerful figure was raised in ancient Hakata lends a touch of romance to a history lover's journey.

History

Its site is recorded at address 1 and addresses 65 and 66 of Gokushomachi, forming part of the vast Hakata ruins. It speaks to one of the oldest layers in the multilayered history of Hakata, a hub of exchange with the Asian continent from ancient into medieval times. For the detailed findings of excavations, official information and references are worth consulting.
