
Overview
The Port of Hakata sits at the inner reaches of Hakata Bay in Fukuoka City. Opened in 1899, it is designated an international hub port under Japan's Port and Harbor Act. Known in ancient times as Na-no-tsu and Hakata-tsu, it was counted among the historic Santsu-Shichiso ports.

History
Historically called Na-no-tsu, Na-no-otsu, and Hakata-tsu, it flourished in medieval times as one of the Santsu-Shichiso trading ports. It opened as a modern harbor on 4 August 1899. Today, as a central port supporting the Kyushu economy, it has developed international container terminals and become an advanced logistics hub.
