Overview

Mount Tsubogami is a 971-meter peak in west-central Ehime, standing in the western part of the Ishizuchi Range in its broad sense. Rising on the boundary between Ozu (former Nagahama) and Iyo (former Futami), this inland mountain lies close to the Seto Inland Sea and looks out toward the Iyo Sea. Some hiking guides call the surrounding area the 「Izushi Highlands」, though the name is not widely used; it is a quiet peak retaining the feel of a rustic country hill, and is counted among the 「Hundred Famous Mountains of Shikoku」.

Highlights

  • A 971-meter peak in the western Ishizuchi Range in the broad sense
  • A ridge straddling the boundary of Ozu and Iyo cities
  • A rustic country hill chosen as a Hundred Famous Mountain of Shikoku
  • Views toward the Inland Sea from inland, close to the Iyo Sea

History

The name Tsubogami hints at old beliefs and landform-related appellations, carrying the memory of the land within the mountain's very name. Sitting at the western fringe of the Ishizuchi Range, this peak has long marked the boundary between the two city districts and shared in the lives of local people, and was later chosen as one of the Hundred Famous Mountains of Shikoku. Untouched by flashy tourist development, it preserves the atmosphere of an old-time mountain village and suits those who wish to walk in quiet.

Access

Mount Tsubogami lies near 33.60 degrees north and 132.55 degrees east, on the boundary between Ozu and Iyo in Ehime. It is an inland peak close to the Iyo Sea on the Inland Sea side, with a trail leading up from the villages at its foot. Access by public transport is limited and path conditions vary by section, so it is reassuring to check the latest trail and parking information with official sources such as Ozu and Iyo cities before you climb.

Best season

Spring, when the trees bud, and autumn, with clear air and long views, are the easiest seasons for walking. In summer the shaded trail brings coolness, though be prepared for humidity and insects. Winter, though this is a low mountain, turns cold, with frost or a dusting of snow on some days. The westward view as the sun sets over the Iyo Sea is said to be beautiful, so plan around the weather and sunset time.

  3. 3Enjoy views toward the Iyo Sea and Inland Sea near the top
  4. 4After descending, tour the foothill hamlets and coastal towns

Did you know?

💡 At 971 meters, Mount Tsubogami offers a satisfying height for a peak on the Inland Sea side. Some materials introduce the surroundings as the 「Izushi Highlands」, but the name has not really taken hold. That it stands well to the west of the main Ishizuchi summits yet still earns a place among the Hundred Famous Mountains of Shikoku well expresses this peak's individual character.
