History
The shrine has long served as the head guardian shrine of the Honai region, drawing on the Mishima-Oyamazumi tradition connected to the great Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima Island. Its torii gate is said to have been donated in 1856 by Date Munetada, lord of the Uwajima domain. The plaque on that gate bears the characters for the shrine's alternate name, Funatonomori, a valuable reminder of the bond between the feudal lord and the local community.
