Overview

Takaikami Island (Takaikami-shima) is a small inhabited island in the Seto Inland Sea, part of the town of Kamijima in Ochi District, Ehime Prefecture. It belongs to the Geiyo Islands and forms one corner of the Uoshima island group. There are no flashy attractions here; instead the island offers the quiet luxury of doing nothing, with its fishing-village life, indented coastline, and the classic Seto Inland Sea scenery of countless islands scattered across calm water. Reachable only by boat, it sees few visitors and keeps a slow, unhurried atmosphere.

Highlights

  • Quiet island scenery with the multi-island beauty of the Seto Inland Sea up close
  • A simple village where fishing life endures, wrapped by an indented coastline
  • The sense of escape unique to an island reachable only by boat
  • Sea views that reach distant island silhouettes on clear days

History

Takaikami Island has long been inhabited within the maritime culture of the Seto Inland Sea and today falls under the town of Kamijima. Sitting among the many small islands of the Uoshima group and the wider Geiyo Islands, it has supported communities built around fishing. For detailed accounts of its settlement and history, it is best to check official sources such as the town of Kamijima.

Access

The island lies in the island district of Kamijima at roughly 34.19 degrees north and 133.27 degrees east. No bridge connects it directly from Honshu or Shikoku, so access is only by scheduled passenger boat. Always confirm the current departure ports, timetables, and whether services are running through official transport information before you travel. Getting around the island is mainly on foot, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Best season

Spring and autumn, with calm seas and soft light, are the easiest times to enjoy island walks and sea views. Summer shows off the vivid blue Seto waters but brings strong sun, so take precautions against the heat. In winter the clear air can reveal distant island silhouettes with crisp detail. In every season the boats depend on the weather, so check sea conditions on the day before setting out.

💡 Takaikami is a small inhabited island in the Uoshima group, and on its higher ground stands the Takaikami-shima Lighthouse, which commands a sweeping view over the Seto Inland Sea. The island itself and the lighthouse are known as separate spots, and pairing the two is the classic way to explore a visit here.
