Overview

The Sōja River rises in the center of the Takanawa Peninsula in central Ehime Prefecture, flows northward, and empties into the Hiuchi-nada Sea. Downstream it shapes the Imabari Plain, where the city of Imabari, famous for its towel industry, spreads out. It is a mother river that supports the life and scenery of the region.

Highlights

  • A flow that rises in the center of the Takanawa Peninsula and empties into the Hiuchi-nada Sea
  • The terrain that nurtured the Imabari Plain spreading downstream
  • The form of a typical Shikoku river linking the mountains and the Seto Inland Sea
  • A waterside that supports life in Imabari, the town of towels

History

Gathering the waters that flow from the center of the Takanawa Peninsula and carrying them over long ages to the northern sea, the Sōja River has built the fertile Imabari Plain downstream. The city of Imabari that opened up on this plain can be said to have grown upon the blessings of water and land the river brought. For a detailed history of its flood control and water use, please refer to official sources.

Access

The river flows through Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture, passing near the city center before emptying into the Hiuchi-nada Sea. Imabari is also the Shikoku-side gateway to the Shimanami Kaido, and the river is easy to reach from the city center. For specific riverside walking paths and points of interest, please check locally or through official information.

Best season

The volume and character of the flow change with the seasons, and the river can be enjoyed in every season: the riverbanks in the season of fresh green and cherry blossoms, the pleasant clear water of summer, and the crisp air of autumn. For safety, please avoid approaching the river when the water is high.
