History

Garyu Sanso was built in 1907. It is said to have been raised as a refined expression of sukiya style at a scenic spot where the Hiji River curves broadly, a place likened to a reclining dragon (garyu). The buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties and the garden a National Place of Scenic Beauty, conveying the high refinement of Meiji-era sukiya architecture to this day.

Access

It stands in Ozu City, Ehime, beside the Hiji River (around 33.51 degrees north, 132.55 degrees east). Close to central Ozu, it is commonly reached on foot or by car from the nearest railway station. Please confirm opening hours, admission fees, and parking with official information before visiting.

Best season

Each season has its charm, but the fresh green of early summer and the coloring leaves of autumn are especially rewarding in the garden. The Hiji River is also known for its mist, and the quiet hours of morning and evening reveal the harmony between the villa and nature. Dress warmly in the cold winter.
