History

Keshima is a small island belonging to Imabari (once Onishi-cho of Ochi District), and together with the surrounding coast including Suwa-no-hana it has helped shape the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea. Being uninhabited, the island has no facilities of its own, yet within a sea famed for its scattered isles, such small islands have long adorned the maritime routes. For details of its origins or whether landing is permitted, it is best to check official sources.

Access

The island floats in the Itsuki-nada about 1.7 kilometres northwest of Suwa-no-hana in the Beppu area of Onishi-cho, Imabari, near latitude 34.07 and longitude 132.88. As it is uninhabited there is no regular ferry service, so in practice you view its silhouette from the shore near Suwa-no-hana across the water. Means of approach, whether landing is allowed, and nearby parking or viewing conditions vary, so check official sources.

Best season

Calm, clear days in spring and early summer, and in autumn, are best for the view, when sea and sky are so clear that the island stands out sharply. The stillness of the Seto Inland Sea and its beautiful sunsets add to the appeal. Since the island is uninhabited, enjoying the scenery from the far shore on a mild, calm day is recommended.
