Overview
Shiroyama Park is a large comprehensive park spreading across the Marunouchi and Horinouchi districts of Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture. It treats the hill of Shiroyama (Mount Katsu) and its foot as a single green space, crowned by Matsuyama Castle whose keep still stands on the summit. Opened in 1874, the park grounds are designated a National Historic Site of Japan and are counted among the country's 100 Best Urban Parks and 100 Best Historical Parks. Set in the heart of the city yet richly wooded, it serves both as a beloved local retreat and as the central gateway to sightseeing in Matsuyama.
Highlights
- ●Matsuyama Castle, its Edo-period keep still standing atop the hill
- ●Spring cherry blossoms, ranked among Japan's Top 100 spots
- ●A National Historic Site listed among Japan's 100 best urban and historical parks

History
The park's story began in 1874, when the former castle grounds of the Matsuyama domain were opened to the public. Matsuyama Castle, which crowns the hill and preserves its Edo-period form, is regarded as an important cultural property, while the whole park is protected as a Historic Site under Japan's cultural property law. In the modern era, museums, libraries and halls gathered around the grounds, weaving together the memory of the old castle town with the cultural life of the present.
Access
The park lies in the central Marunouchi and Horinouchi districts of Matsuyama, at roughly 33.84 N and 132.77 E. It is close to Matsuyamashi Station and the Okaido shopping street, so it is easy to reach on foot or by streetcar. A ropeway, chairlift and walking path lead up to the castle on the summit. Opening hours of the facilities and the operating times of the lifts vary by season, so please check official information before your visit.
Best season
Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, the park is at its most brilliant in spring. Blossoms framed against the castle hill are especially striking and draw many visitors for hanami. Fresh greenery in early summer and autumn foliage make for pleasant strolls too, while on clear winter days the view from the keep stands out sharply.

💡 Besides Matsuyama Castle, the grounds hold the Museum of Art Ehime, the Ehime Prefectural Library, Matsuyama Civic Hall and the NHK Matsuyama Broadcasting Station, making the park far more than a green space: it is a shared hub of culture, administration and broadcasting. The name Shiroyama comes from the very hill the park embraces.
