History
The basin of the Ichinomiya was one of the social, cultural, and economic centers of Kazusa Province in pre-modern Japan. Although the river itself was very shallow, it is said that until the beginning of the Meiji period it was used as a waterway to carry sardines caught at Kujukuri Beach toward Tokyo Bay. The wealth of Kujukuri, prosperous through sardine fishing and the production of dried-sardine fertilizer, was carried inland and on toward Edo and Tokyo along this river, supporting life in Kazusa. From today's calm surface, the memory of that once-lively transport can be imagined.
Access
The Ichinomiya River flows roughly west to east through the southern Kujukuri Plain and empties into the Pacific Ocean on the Kujukuri Beach side. Its mouth lies at roughly 35.39 degrees north and 140.39 degrees east, near the town of Ichinomiya. Stations such as Mobara and Kazusa-Ichinomiya on the JR Sotobo Line are convenient starting points for places along the river, making it easy to combine with the town of Mobara or the seaside at Ichinomiya. As the state of embankments and riverside paths differs by location, it is best to confirm on site or through official sources when strolling.
Best season
The face of this river, flowing gently through farmland, changes greatly with the seasons. From spring to early summer when green spreads along the water, and from late summer to autumn when the rice ears take on color, the peaceful scenery of the Kujukuri Plain shows at its best. In winter the clear air affords long views, well suited to a walk looking out over the Pacific from the river mouth.
