Overview

Nago-dera is a Buddhist temple in the Nago neighborhood of Tateyama, southern Chiba Prefecture, belonging to the Shingon-shu Chizan-ha sect. Its honzon is a statue of Senju Kannon Bosatsu, and it is the 33rd and final stop of the Bando Sanjusankasho pilgrimage, making it the temple of pilgrimage completion. It is also counted among the 100 Treasures of Chiba.

History

Nago-dera is said to have been founded in 717, in the early Nara period. It belongs to the Shingon-shu Chizan-ha sect and bears the mountain name Fudaraku-san. As the 33rd and final stop of the Bando Sanjusankasho pilgrimage that begins at Sugimoto-dera in Kamakura, it has long drawn worshippers as the temple marking the completion of the pilgrimage.

Access

The temple is located in the Nago neighborhood of Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, and can be reached from the surrounding urban area of southern Boso.

Best season

The precincts, which enshrine the Senju Kannon honzon, can be visited year round, and mild seasons make it easy to combine a visit with a walk around southern Boso.
