Overview

Narita-san Shinshō-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in central Narita, Chiba Prefecture, and one of the lead temples of the Chisan branch. It is dedicated to Fudō Myōō (Ācala) and serves as a major center of Fudō Myōō devotion, popularly known as Narita Fudō. It is among the most visited temples in the Kantō region, especially during the New Year, and is well known for its prayer rituals.

History

The temple is traditionally said to have been founded in 940, during the mid-Heian period, by Kanchō, a disciple in the lineage of Kōbō Daishi. Since its founding it has developed as a center of devotion to Fudō Myōō.

The temple stands in central Narita and is close to Narita International Airport, making it accessible to visitors from Japan and abroad. The surrounding approach area can be explored on foot.

Best season

The New Year period draws especially large numbers of worshippers. Visits are possible throughout the year.
