Overview

Seiryu Shrine stands in Horie, Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture. Set in the old downtown of Urayasu near the Former Edo River, it carries into the present the history of a place that flourished as a fishing town. An old shrine that predates the bayside land reclamation of Tokyo Bay, it has been cherished as the tutelary deity woven into local people's lives. Though close to central Tokyo and the Tokyo Disney Resort, its grounds carry a calm air where the atmosphere of the old town can be felt.

Highlights

  • An old Horie shrine conveying the history of the fishing town Urayasu
  • A location characteristic of a waterside town, close to the Former Edo River
  • Grounds retaining old-town atmosphere despite nearness to the city and the resort
  • A calm presence cherished as the community's tutelary deity

History

Seiryu Shrine has long stood in the land of Horie, Urayasu City. Urayasu once thrived on gathering nori seaweed and shellfish and on fishing, and for people living by sea and river the shrine was a mainstay of daily life. The name Seiryu and a shrine title connected to water evoke the faith characteristic of a waterside town. For the precise founding date, enshrined deities, and legends, it is best to confirm through notices at the shrine or official information when you visit. Along with the old place-name Horie, it is a shrine that has watched over the community's journey.

Access

The shrine lies near latitude 35.66 and longitude 139.89, in Horie, Urayasu City. Urayasu Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line is the nearest, from which access on foot or by local bus is convenient. From Shin-Urayasu or Maihama stations on the JR Keiyo Line, a bus or taxi will also bring you there. As this is a downtown area near the Former Edo River with some winding streets, confirming the route beforehand is reassuring. Since the surroundings are residential, please keep your visit quiet.

Best season

Facing Tokyo Bay, Urayasu is relatively mild and pleasant to visit year-round. The season of the festival's liveliness and the New Year's first shrine visit are especially bustling. The gentle warmth of spring and the clear air of autumn are comfortable for strolling the grounds, well suited to combining with a walk through the old town.

Did you know?

💡 The name Urayasu is said to carry the wish that the ura (shore) be peaceful, and the town developed as a fishing community. Horie, where Seiryu Shrine stands, is one of the older central areas within that Urayasu, retaining old-town charm in contrast to the new districts around the Tokyo Disney Resort.
