History
The foundations of the municipality were laid in 1889, and the city was formally established on 1 January 1921. Its name derives from the Chiba clan, who governed the area in medieval times. The city became a government-designated city in 1992, when its six wards were established.

The city lies in the central part of Chiba Prefecture, with its urban area spreading along Tokyo Bay. As one of the core cities of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, it serves as a key transport hub linking the surrounding region.
