History
Renge-ji has continued its journey as a Nichiren-sect temple. Its former head temple is Hiraga Hondo-ji, whose halls stand in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, and this main-branch relationship tells of the temple's spiritual lineage. Belonging to the Ten-shi lineage and bearing the mountain name Myohozan are signs of its inheritance of Nichiren's teaching, rooted in the Lotus Sutra. With the sub-temple Gyokusen-ji on its grounds, it has endured as a local center of faith. For the circumstances and dates of its founding, it is best to confirm through official information or on-site guides when visiting.
Access
The temple lies near latitude 35.77 and longitude 140.51, in the countryside of Tako Town, Katori District. By rail, Shimosa-Tachibana Station on the Narita Line or the center of Tako Town serve as guides, from which a bus, taxi, or car is convenient. By car, access from the Higashi-Kanto Expressway or the Ken-O Expressway is common, and the site is relatively close to Narita Airport. As some sections of road are narrow, it is reassuring to confirm the route and parking availability via official sources before setting out.
Best season
Tako Town is a satoyama land of thriving rice cultivation, where the turning of the seasons feels beautiful. Spring's fresh greenery into early summer, and autumn when the rice ripens and leaves color, are especially recommended for strolling the grounds. Summer offers deep-green rural scenery, while winter brings quiet prayer in clear air.

Did you know?
💡 The mountain name Myohozan derives from Myoho Renge-kyo, the Japanese title of the Lotus Sutra, resonating with the temple's own name Renge (lotus). That it holds the sub-temple Gyokusen-ji suggests this temple once possessed a certain scale as a center.
