Overview

Ryogen-ji is a Nichiren-sect temple in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. It sits in the northern part of the city, in the same area as the nearby Myoten-ji, keeping composed grounds within a residential district. Its name contains the character 「gen (source)」, and the temple conveys a stillness that seems to return you to the wellspring of the heart. It is not a famous sightseeing site, but it is a Nichiren temple worth visiting when you wish to step away from the bustle of travel and catch your breath.

Highlights

  • A Nichiren temple in northern Matsudo, near Myoten-ji, within a residential district
  • The quiet, heart-calming air of grounds evoked by the character 「source」
  • A place of Lotus Sutra faith rooted in the 「Namu Myoho Renge Kyo」 daimoku
  • A locally blended charm where you can quietly worship mid-journey

History

Ryogen-ji is a Nichiren temple handed down in Matsudo, carrying on a faith centered on the daimoku 「Namu Myoho Renge Kyo」. The Nichiren sect was founded by the priest Nichiren in the Kamakura period and spread early to the Matsudo area, once known as Shimousa Province. Ryogen-ji is one temple within that lineage of regional devotion. For the year of its founding or its detailed history, it is most reliable to check with the temple or Matsudo City's official information.

Access

The temple lies in the northern part of Matsudo City, Chiba, around latitude 35.83 and longitude 139.94. Like the nearby Myoten-ji, it stands in a northern Matsudo residential area, usually reached from the town center. Confirm the nearest station, buses, and parking through official information before you visit.

Best season

Spring to early summer, when the temple greenery comes alive, and clear-aired autumn are especially recommended. Because Nichiren services and events such as the O-eshiki fall on different dates each year, check the temple's official information for the timing of your visit.
