Overview

Shinsho-ji is a Buddhist temple in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, belonging to the Buzan school of the Shingon sect. Part of the Buzan tradition whose head temple is Hase-dera in Nara, it carries on the esoteric Shingon teachings of Kobo Daishi (Kukai) and stands quietly within the town of Matsudo. Though set amid the city, its precinct holds a calm, unhurried atmosphere where local people come to offer prayers. Sharing the same school as nearby Shofuku-ji, it reflects how widely the Shingon teachings took root in this area.

Highlights

  • A quiet in-town temple of the Buzan Shingon school
  • An approachable place of prayer close to daily life in Matsudo
  • Ties to the head temple Hase-dera in Nara
  • Well placed to pair with the same-school Shofuku-ji

History

Shinsho-ji is a temple of the Buzan branch of Shingon Buddhism. The Buzan school, centered on Hase-dera in Sakurai, Nara, flourished in the Edo period and spread branch temples across the Kanto region, and Shinsho-ji belongs to that lineage. It is thought to have grown alongside the local community of Matsudo, though details of its founding, history, and any designated treasures are limited in public sources. To learn more, it is best to check with the temple or the Matsudo city authorities.

Access

The temple lies within Matsudo, Chiba, around 35.81 degrees north and 139.90 degrees east. It is close to central Matsudo, and access from the nearest station is generally on foot or by bus. As detailed routes and parking may change, please confirm official information before your visit.

Best season

The temple can be visited quietly throughout the year, with the fresh green of spring and early summer and the clear air of autumn being especially pleasant. New Year prayers and the equinox and Obon seasons draw more local visitors. Check the temple's notices for the dates of services and events.

Did you know?

💡 Nearby in the same city stands Shofuku-ji of the same school, so the similarly named Shinsho-ji and Shofuku-ji have both been handed down as Buzan Shingon temples. Visiting the two in succession gives a sense of how Shingon Buddhism spread through Matsudo.
