Overview

The Iwaki River flows through western Aomori Prefecture and is the main stream of the Iwaki River system. Designated a Class 1 River under the Rivers Act of 1964, it is about 102 kilometers long, with a drainage area of some 2,544 square kilometers, and is the longest river in Aomori Prefecture. It serves as a source of irrigation for the prefecture's large-scale rice and apple production.

History

Formerly called the "Hirosaki River" or the "Ōkawa," it was later unified under the name Iwaki River. The river's name derives from Mount Iwaki; the word "Iwaki" is said to stem from sacred-mountain belief, akin to "iwakura," the seat where a deity resides. It is managed as a Class 1 River by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

Access

As a river crossing western Aomori Prefecture, its banks can be reached by public transport or car from various points along the basin.

Best season

The middle course is known as an apple-producing area, and the rural scenery of the basin can be enjoyed as it shifts through the seasons.
