History
Detailed records of Monpō-ji's own founding are limited in available sources. Elsewhere in Sotogahama town, another Nichiren temple, Gyōman-ji, traces its origins to a small hall built during the Taishō era; it became known as the Kanita meeting hall (Kanita Kyōkaisho) in 1927 (Shōwa 2), gained a main hall in 1949 (Shōwa 24), and took the name Gyōman-ji in 1952 (Shōwa 27) — a history that offers a glimpse into how the town's Nichiren temples developed.
Access
Monpō-ji, whose mountain name is Uda-zan, stands at Motouda in Tatehama Ishizaki, Sotogahama. The same town is also home to Gyōman-ji, a temple with a different history, so some visitors combine a visit here with nearby temples.
Best season
Sotogahama faces the Tsugaru Strait, where north winds pick up and snowfall increases in winter, so late spring through early autumn — when the sea is calmer — tends to be the more comfortable time to plan a visit.
