Overview

Cape Tappi is a headland in the town of Sotogahama, Aomori Prefecture, jutting into the Tsugaru Strait from the northern tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula. It marks the northwestern point of Honshu and forms part of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park. The cape is famous for its almost constant strong winds and for the view across the strait to the Matsumae Peninsula in Hokkaido on clear days.

Highlights

  • Sweeping view of the Tsugaru Strait from the peninsula's northernmost cape
  • Tappizaki Lighthouse, one of Japan's 50 Lighthouses
  • The Matsumae Peninsula of Hokkaido, visible across the strait on clear days
  • Stone monuments to Osamu Dazai and others connected to Aomori

History

The name is believed to derive from the Ainu word tampa, meaning "sword's edge." The Tappizaki Lighthouse standing on the cape is listed among the "50 Lighthouses of Japan" by the Japan Lighthouse Association. Near the lighthouse are stone monuments commemorating people associated with Aomori Prefecture, including the author Osamu Dazai.

Access

The cape lies in Sotogahama, Higashitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture, at the very tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula. Public transport is limited, so check maps and official sources for detailed routes. Dress for strong wind before you go.

Best season

A clear day around midday is ideal, when the air is crisp and the Matsumae Peninsula across the strait is easy to see. Because the wind blows hard year-round, prepare for it in any season.
