Overview

Hirosaki Church is a Christian church building standing in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. It continues to serve as the worship hall of Hirosaki Church, affiliated with the United Church of Christ in Japan, and is valued locally as a piece of historic architecture.

Highlights

  • A historic church building dating from 1906
  • Designated an Aomori Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property (Aomori Prefecture Jūhō)
  • Still an active church used for regular worship
  • Conveniently located in central Hirosaki

History

The building was erected in 1906 as the chapel of what was then the Hirosaki Methodist Church. Following later denominational mergers, it became the church building of the present-day Hirosaki Church within the United Church of Christ in Japan, and it has remained in continuous use for worship ever since. In 1993, its historical and architectural significance was formally recognized when it was designated an Aomori Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property (Aomori Prefecture Jūhō).

Access

This church stands in central Hirosaki and was designated an Aomori Prefectural Treasure in 1993. Its location within the city center makes it an easy stop on foot or combined with local transport.

Best season

Visits center on the interior of the 1906 building, so the season matters less here. Hirosaki does draw crowds during cherry blossom and autumn foliage season, so those wanting a quieter look inside may prefer visiting outside those peak weeks.
