Overview

Lake Jusan is a brackish-water lagoon spread along the Sea of Japan coast in the northwestern part of the Tsugaru Peninsula, Aomori Prefecture. Located in the city of Goshogawara, it covers about 17.81 square kilometers. The mixing of seawater and freshwater gives it a distinctive aquatic character, and it is the third-largest lake in Aomori Prefecture after Lake Towada and Lake Ogawara. Locals also call it Jusan Lagoon.

Highlights

  • Distinctive brackish waterscape where sea and river water mix
  • The lagoon mouth connecting to the Sea of Japan
  • A shoreline stretching roughly 30 kilometers
  • Views of the sunset settling over the water

History

Lake Jusan is a lagoon-type estuary that opens onto the Sea of Japan, with a shoreline stretching about 30 kilometers. It is shallow, with a maximum depth of roughly 3 meters, and the meeting of sea water and river water has shaped a unique waterside environment over a long span of time. The main attraction here is the natural landform itself rather than any built monument.

Access

The lake lies in the city of Goshogawara, in the northwestern part of the Tsugaru Peninsula, facing the Sea of Japan. Because it sits along the peninsula's coast, visitors traveling by public transport or car are advised to confirm exact routes and travel times using maps and official information.

Best season

Spring through autumn, when the water is calmest, is an easy time to visit, and dusk is especially rewarding for the sunset reflected on the water along this Sea of Japan coast.
