Overview

Entsū-ji Temple is a Sōtō Zen temple in Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kichijōsan, and it enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha as its principal image. As the head temple (honbō) of the famous Osorezan Bodaiji, it has long stood as an important center of faith on the Shimokita Peninsula.

History

According to tradition, the temple was founded in 1522 with the support of the Nanbu clan by the Sōtō monk Shukaku, and it was restored in 1659. In 1871 the administrative office of the Tonami Domain was placed at this temple.

Access

The temple lies in the city of Mutsu in Aomori Prefecture. As the head temple governing Osorezan Bodaiji, many visitors combine it with a pilgrimage to Osorezan. Please check maps and official information for detailed routes.

Best season

Early summer through autumn, which overlaps with the open season of Osorezan, is the most comfortable time to visit and to explore the quiet grounds in clear air.
