History
According to temple tradition, Hongakuji was originally a Tendai-sect temple, but in 1557 (Koji 3) it was converted to the Jodo (Pure Land) school by Joren-sha Toyo. It is a branch temple of Osawasan Entsuji in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, linking it through its sectarian lineage to the distant Kanto region. This conversion during the Sengoku period reflects the shifting religious currents of the area.
