History
Mount Taihei has long been an object of worship, a sacred mountain crowned by the inner shrine of Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine and a center of the Miyoshi faith dedicated to a god of strength and victory. Together with the lower shrine at its foot, it has drawn wide reverence and attracted people as a mountain of pilgrimage and mountain asceticism. For detailed shrine lore and festivals, it is best to consult the official information of Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine and Akita City.
Access
Rising around 39.80 degrees north and 140.31 degrees east on the border of Akita City and Kamikoani Village, its gateway is central Akita City, reachable from Akita Station and Akita Airport. Trails are maintained as part of the Taiheizan Prefectural Natural Park, but trailheads, routes and opening conditions change by season, so please confirm with official Akita City and natural park information before setting out.
Best season
From early summer with its shining greenery to autumn when the slopes turn to brocade is the fine season for climbing. On clear days a broad view opens out over Akita City and as far as the Sea of Japan. In winter it is covered in deep snow, so without ample gear and experience it is better not to push on and instead enjoy the snow-clad Taihei from below.
