Highlights
- ●The memory of the Ushu Kaido held in the nickname Chayakko Ichirizuka
- ●Sanbonsugi Ichirizuka, the only mounds on both sides of an active national road in Akita
- ●A convenient site along Route 13, running north to south through Akita
- ●The scenery of Kitanaraoka, where the historic highway meets the modern trunk road
History
It was registered as a roadside station on 16 April 1996 and opened on 28 June that year. This spot was once a key point on the Ushu Kaido highway, and a milestone mound called Sanbonsugi Ichirizuka, also known as Nagachoba Ichirizuka, still remains on the highway in front of the station. It is the only place in Akita where such mounds survive on both sides of an active national road, so the layering of the historic road and the modern one is itself the attraction.
Access
It sits near 39.52 degrees north and 140.38 degrees east, along National Route 13 in Kitanaraoka, Daisen City. Facing Route 13, which runs north to south through Akita, it is convenient to reach by car; check official information for nearby sights and public transport details.
Best season
For strolling in the footsteps of the old highway, the walkable spring to autumn is ideal. To view the milestone mounds and surrounding scenery at leisure, the long, mild days are most comfortable. In winter, take care on snowy roads.
