Roadside station Ouchi
A roadside station in Akita — local food and souvenirs.
Overview
Roadside Station Ouchi stands along National Route 105 in Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture, and goes by the friendly nickname Heart Port Ouchi. It is far more than a simple rest stop: it houses the hot-spring lodging facility Poporokko and is directly linked to JR Ugo-Iwaya Station by a connecting passage called Popo Road. This rare fusion of a railway station and a roadside station makes it a welcoming gateway for both drivers and rail travelers.

History
Part of the facility opened on April 25, 2000, and it began full operation as a roadside station on December 8 of the same year, following its registration on August 18. The name Poporokko blends the Italian word popolo, meaning people, with kko, an affectionate suffix from the Akita dialect, expressing the wish to be an open place of community exchange.
Access
The station sits in the inland part of Yurihonjo City, near latitude 39.44 north and longitude 140.09 east, and is reached via National Route 105. By rail it adjoins JR Ugo-Iwaya Station and connects to it directly through the Popo Road passage, so it is easy to visit by car or by train. Please check official sources for the latest timetables and opening hours.
Best season
Because it combines a rest stop with a hot spring, it can be enjoyed year-round, yet warming up in the bath during Akita's snowy winter feels especially rewarding. From spring through autumn it pairs well with scenic drives and rail trips, and it is a fine place to shop for seasonal local products.
